From hot springs to high peaks

The ultimate Colorado family road trip in 2026

A state of snow-dusted peaks, sandstone canyons, dinosaur bones and natural hot tubs, Colorado is where families can kayak in the morning, go skiing in the afternoon and sleep under stars that actually sparkle.

Whether you’re travelling with teens who think nothing impresses them or younger kids with endless curiosity and energy, Colorado offers experiences that stick. And with Journeyscape curating your route, you’ll get all of the magic and none of the stress.

Denver

Colorado’s capital is no dusty frontier town. It’s a thriving metropolitan hub where Old West grit meets modern cool. With six major sports teams in Denver, you can nearly always catch a game – be it NBA, MLB baseball, NFL or NHL ice hockey – at one of the city’s stadiums. Alternativly, wander through the interactive History Colorado Centre to uncover tales of gold rushes and ghost towns.

The Children’s Museum and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science – which has a dedicated Discovery Zone designed specifically for kids under eight – are big wins for younger kids. Older children might be tempted by street-food markets, record shops and the colourful murals of the RiNo Arts District.

But whatever the rest of the day holds, be sure to end it with a sunset pilgrimage to Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, even if there’s no concert scheduled. The views alone will have everyone reaching for their phones – and not for zombie scrolling.

Rocky Mountain National Park

This is where the air gets thinner and the scenery gets supercharged. Just a 90-minute drive from Denver, the park delivers that classic Colorado drama of jagged peaks, wildflower-strewn meadows and alpine lakes that are so still, you might mistake them for paintings.

Adventurous families can enjoy short, scenic hikes or tackle horse-riding trails that wind through pine forests.

The Estes Park Aerial Tramway gives a bird’s-eye view without the cardio, while the Junior Ranger programme keeps youngsters entertained. If all that doesn’t keep them off their screens, looking for elk, marmots and moose, or just enjoying a family picnic with a view, certainly will.

Aspen

Forget the fur coats and après-ski clichés, Aspen is an all-season adventure base with a sophisticated side. In winter, it’s snow-sports central, but come summer it morphs into a hikers’ haven and mountain bikers’ dream.

Families can raft the Roaring Fork River, ride the Silver Queen Gondola for knockout views, or explore nature trails that start right in town. Best of all, Aspen’s upscale kids’ camps offer guided outdoor learning, so your children can build forest shelters or go gold panning while you sip coffee and admire the views. Win-win.

Glenwood Springs

Equal parts relaxing and ridiculous fun, Glenwood Springs is Colorado’s natural spa town but with an adrenaline side hustle. Float in the mineral-rich waters of Glenwood Hot Springs Pool (with splash zones and diving boards) or try the newer Iron Mountain Hot Springs, which has an adult-only area for a more tranquil soak with mountain views.

The Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, perched high above the valley, combines cave tours with high-altitude roller coasters and gondola rides, perfect for kids who like their thrills with a side of geology. The Glenwood Canyon Bike Trail offers a gentle but jaw-droppingly scenic ride along the Colorado River that the whole family can enjoy.

Grand Junction

This is the Wild West of family holiday locations in Colorado, offering orchards, canyon drives and ziplines over actual rivers. Grand Junction is a paradise for active families, where you can start your morning picking peaches, then climb red rock trails in the Colorado National Monument by afternoon.

There’s less tourist traffic here than in the state’s headline parks, but the landscapes are just as cinematic. Younger kids will love the U-Pick farms and petting zoos, while parents can enjoy tastings along the Fruit & Wine Byway. This is one of those unique places where you’ll find that rare blend of rural charm and edge-of-your-seat adventure.

Durango

This historic railroad town doubles as an adventure HQ, with mountain biking, e-biking and ziplining just minutes from its charming downtown area. Hop aboard the narrow-gauge steam train for a journey that winds through dramatic mountain canyons and pine-scented forests, chugging past views that belong on a movie set. Afterwards, reward yourself with an ice cream from Cream Bean Berry.

Just 40 minutes away lies Mesa Verde National Park, home to ancient cliff dwellings carved into the rock by the Ancestral Puebloans. Ranger-led tours through these archaeological marvels are unforgettable, especially for teens who’d rather explore ruins than museums.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Imagine a beach in the middle of the mountains and then swap the ocean for towering sand dunes. Welcome to one of Colorado’s most surreal playgrounds. If simply enjoying the views isn’t enough, you can rent sandboards or sleds to race down the dunes, splash in Medano Creek during the spring melt or build elaborate sandcastles.

When night falls, stay for stargazing. As an International Dark Sky Park, this is one of the best places in the US to see the Milky Way. Journeyscape can even arrange luxury stargazing setups with telescopes, blankets and cocoa.

Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs is the grand finale your trip deserves. It’s awe-inspiring and action-packed. Start at the Garden of the Gods, where towering red-rock spires rise dramatically from the earth in a free public park that is anything but ordinary. Ride the historic cog railway to the summit of Pikes Peak for panoramic views so stirring they helped inspire the anthem ‘America the Beautiful’, or push your limits on the dizzying Royal Gorge Bridge.

For family-friendly thrills, head to Broadmoor Seven Falls, where scenic trails, cascading waterfalls and ziplining adventures will burn all that excess energy. Then wind down at the nearby US Olympic & Paralympic Museum, where interactive exhibits turn sports history into something hands-on and genuinely inspiring. Perfect for kids with big dreams and even bigger imaginations.
